Auckland to Noumea Yacht Race The 2009 Ocean Race will be conducted by the Royal Akarana Yacht Club in conjunction with the Cercle Nautique Caledonien in Noumea, New Caledonia. In April 1964 a race was sailed from Whangarei to Noumea, New Caledonia. A fleet of 36 boats took part in the original race and was won by a ketch called Tarau which was based in Whangarei. This morning I braved the drizzle to watch the start of the 50th Annual Yacht Race from Auckland to Tauranga. A fleet of over sixty boats lined up for the start in Auckland's Waitemata Harbour.
