DNA Boats - Great Design, Great use of Technology, Guts and Passion for Great Boats.
At every Boat Show I come across something that surprises me. I always start a show by having a quick look around to see if what's new and to pinpoint exhibitors I want to go back and talk to because I think they have something interesting.
At the Christchurch Boat Show it is DNA Boats, a range of alloy boats that stand out as being somehow different from other such boats on display.

The fact that I had never heard of the brand before was intriguing, sparking an interest to ask where they had been made. The two boats on display looked purpose built and it was obvious that a lot of thought had gone into the design.

The man behind the boats is Jason Elvines. With a background in engineering and a passion for great boats Jason makes use of the latest in computer technologies to design features not yet achieved by traditional methods. Each boat is custom built with a purpose in mind and long hours are spent getting the look and potential performance of the boat right using computer simulation and technologies before the manufacturing process begins. Even here, computer technologies play a large part as the use of CNC machines ensures each piece is cut to exact specifications.

Based in Nelson, New Zealand, DNA Boats are different because the manufacturing process from the initial concept, through the design and production phases are all managed in-house. Time is taken to make sure that the look and performance of the boat are right before anything gets cut. This saves on having to fix things or make changes later, and the client gets a boat that matches their expectation exactly.

This is a young company that impressed me with their attitude. Not many marine industries have the guts, passion, self belief and commitment to launch their business in a recession. Jason and his team have a clear vision of what they want to achieve and from the look of the boats on display, they are well on the way to success. This is a company to look out for in the future, and I think we will hear more about them in the coming years.
"If a boat's not designed and built using new technology then it's old technology, DNA Boats' in-house 3D boat design and intelligent manufacturing processes is the future of boating".
